The First Station: An Ancient Ocean
Take a look at the Megalodon the molars in West Java, Indonesia. Around 20 million year ago the warm marine habitats of the past were common in the dry regions of today. Megalodon sharks lived in those waters along with numerous other species of marine life.
Similar to modern sharks, Megalodon continuously produced teeth and then lost them. A few of the teeth were buried in marine sediments. Under the right conditions burial was able to protect them so long that fossilization could occur.
Then geology came in.
The next chapter proceeded incredibly slowly. Sediments formed. Minerals acted in conjunction with buried materials. Geological forces changed landscapes, and areas that had previously been underwater eventually became part of the present-day landscape. This is the reason why buyers find that fossil megalodons can be of different colors.
Indonesian specimens discovered in West Java’s Miocene Bentang Formation typically yellow, golden, brown and red, as well as blue or black. Some even display several shades on a single tooth. The minerals surrounding them can alter the appearance of fossils after it has been placed in a grave for a lengthy period. Nature is not able to replicate the effects in large quantities. Every fossil has been through its own geological history.
